Sharing the Quest for Clean Energy, Strong Economy
For nearly a quarter-century, Appalachian Voices has been working side-by-side with local communities to protect the land, air, water, and people of Central and Southern Appalachia. The organization also advocates for an equitable clean energy economy that will better serve the region.
The effort centers on a continued push away from fossil fuels and making sure that people in the region have access to healthier energy sources, like affordable solar power. These shifts lead to measured gains in the quality of the region’s environment and foster local prosperity.
Over the years, members of the Appalachian Voices leadership team have attended several VCC-hosted events, where they have learned more about our commitment. When it needed to open a deposit account, the nonprofit already knew that the right bank was Virginia Community Capital because of its focus on promoting a better quality of life for all Virginians.
“The VCC mission emphasizes our region’s community development, sustainability, and overall quality of life,” said Maya Viknius, Director of Finance and Operations at Appalachian Voices. Based in Boone, N.C., the nonprofit also has two offices in Virginia.
“These values align with the mission of Appalachian Voices, and our vision of an Appalachia with healthy ecosystems and resilient local economies that allow communities to thrive.”
The United Nations created 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that aim to eradicate poverty and deprivation, grow our economies, protect our environment, and promote peace and good governance. These SDGs best align with VCC, and our mission to positively impact communities.
The Appalachian Voices deposit is aligned to SDGs 7, 11, 12, and 17.
