President and CEO Jane Henderson announced the appointment of Sarah B. Williams as the Chief Risk Officer at Virginia Community Capital (VCC). In this role, a new one for VCC, Williams will oversee the risk management processes for the organization and will manage external audit and loan reviews.
“Sarah Williams brings over 27 years of banking and investment experience to this position,” offered Henderson. “Further, she is already affiliated with VCC due to her work on our board of directors. We are fortunate to bring her talents into a full-time capacity that will strengthen our operations.”
Williams’ past experience includes executive roles in banks as Senior Credit Officer and Division Manager for Corporate and Private Banking groups. She directed Community Investment Banking in Central Virginia at a large financial institution for many years. Williams also brings investment experience through her work as a financial advisor. Her transition from board member to Chief Risk Officer was effective July 1.
“I have watched closely the work at Virginia Community Capital for several years as a board member,” Williams commented. “During this time, I have been consistently impressed by the proactive and innovative approach the entire VCC team applies as they work to build communities, create jobs, and generate financial opportunity for Virginians of all income levels. I feel very privileged to expand my role in this effort and help with the important task of risk management—a necessity as VCC evolves and expands its mission and impact.”
Williams will immediately focus on developing an overall risk management culture for VCC including establishing process, guidance, and reporting associated with risk monitoring and board oversight. She will also play an active role in the proposed equity raise scheduled for later this year.
Williams grew up in Southside Virginia in the town of Halifax where community involvement and a commitment to improving the quality of life for all was a family tradition. “My father was the Sheriff and my Mother was in charge of raising money for just about every great cause that restored many wonderful buildings,” she added.” I believe in the power of private enterprise to create public benefit.”
A highly regarded professional across the Commonwealth, Williams serves as Alumni Managing Director of The School of Business at The College of William and Mary. She serves as Chairman of The Virginia Public Building Authority and is on numerous other boards. Williams has a Masters of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Business Administration from The College of William and Mary.
